Sergio Reguilon’s future looks increasingly likely to be decided in Spain as interest builds from Sevilla and Real Sociedad. Football Insider report that the 28-year-old left-back, who has been a free agent since leaving Tottenham in July, is keen on a return to his home country after a difficult few seasons in England.
Sources suggest Reguilon favours a move back to La Liga despite interest from Premier League clubs, including Everton, who had considered him as an option following injuries to both of their full-backs. Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, Football Insider revealed: “He’s had a disappointing couple of years, Reguilon, after he couldn’t establish himself in the Spurs team. He had a couple of loan spells away at Man United and Brentford, but again didn’t really rip up any trees on those loan moves.”

Both Sevilla, Reguilon’s former club, and Real Sociedad are described as “front-runners” for his signature, with reports indicating that negotiations could move quickly now that the Spanish transfer window has reopened for free agents. The player is said to value the opportunity to relaunch his career in a familiar environment where he has previously thrived.

Although Everton have been linked, their interest is likely to hinge on the severity of their current injury crisis and whether they decide to dip into the free agent market. “Right now, I think probably more likely is that maybe Reguilon could end up returning to his native Spain,” Football Insider added, highlighting that a late Premier League move cannot be ruled out if clubs pick up injuries or suspensions.
Reguilon’s time in England was blighted by inconsistency and short-term loan spells. A fresh start could offer him the platform to rediscover the form that made him one of La Liga’s most promising full-backs when he first broke through at Real Madrid.
For Everton supporters, Reguilon would have been a logical short-term solution given the injuries that have left the squad stretched at full-back. He offers top-flight experience and the ability to slot straight into a Premier League backline. However, the player’s preference for a return to Spain suggests that Everton may need to look elsewhere for reinforcements.
There will be disappointment that the club could miss out on a player available without a transfer fee, especially at a time when financial constraints remain a consideration under Profit and Sustainability Rules. A free transfer would have been a low-risk way to add depth in a position where David Moyes’s options are thin.
That said, Everton fans may also recognise that Reguilon’s form in recent years has been mixed. While talented, he struggled to settle at Tottenham and his loans at Manchester United and Brentford failed to reignite his career. Bringing in a player who may not be fully motivated to remain in England could present its own challenges.
If the club do not move for Reguilon, supporters will expect the board to act swiftly and identify another reliable full-back option before the January window or risk further defensive instability should injuries persist.
