Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Sunderland have initiated talks in an effort to sign OGC Nice goalkeeper Marcin Bulka, who has also been mentioned to be on Manchester United’s radar.
United could recruit a new goalkeeper this summer amidst uncertainty over the futures of Andre Onana and his deputy, Altay Bayindir.
Both Onana and Bayindir were unconvincing last season, making numerous high-profile errors that dearly cost United in games. There is a growing acceptance that neither is the long-term answer and United may ultimately need to dip into the market to address their dilemma between the sticks.
A number of options have been mooted, including Bulka.
A report covered by The Peoples Person earlier this month indicated that United were planning a surprise swoop for Bulka, who has been identified as a potential ideal replacement for Onana.
It was subsequently relayed that the Red Devils had opened talks to try and get a deal for Bulka over the line.
The 6ft 6in target made 40 appearances across all competitions for Nice last season. He conceded 51 goals while keeping eight clean sheets, all of which came in the league.
Bulka managed a 75% save percentage in Ligue 1 and let in 1.12 goals per 90.
However, if United are intent on securing the Poland international, they may have to wait until next summer to finalise the move. This is because of UEFA’s rules around multi-club ownership.
United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe also owns French side Nice, and as part of the agreement allowing both clubs to participate in the Europa League last term, United and Nice have agreed to a temporary freeze on any transfer dealings between them.
Now, Romano has indicated that Sunderland are looking to take advantage to secure Bulka’s services.
Romano wrote on X, “EXCL: Sunderland open talks to sign Polish goalkeeper Marcin Bulka as part of their ambitious project.”
“Bulka has been approached by several clubs this summer but Sunderland are now in active talks with OGC Nice.”
GIVEMESPORT note that Bulka will cost in excess of £13m this summer despite entering the final 12 months of his contract.
He is also on the radar of AC Milan and Galatasaray.
