Ferencvaros aren't just any club - they are a Hungarian football dynasty. Founded in 1899, they boast 36 championships, making them national record champions. Here are some facts about the Budapest club worth knowing ahead of our UEFA Europa League home game this Thursday, 23 October (18:45 CEST):
Their name comes from the Budapest district of Ferencvaros, where the club was founded in 1899. The ninth district translates as Franz Town in reference to Emperor Franz I of Austria. Torna Club means 'gymnastics club' - a reference to the fact that the club was originally intended as a multi-sport community.
The Ferencvaroser Turnclub, founded in 1899, has grown over time with many divisions and, in addition to its football team (founded in 1900), also has an ice hockey team, which has been part of the multinational ICE Hockey League since this season. This Friday, of all days, the Hungarians are visiting our EC Red Bull Salzburg.
We're especially looking forward to seeing our former player Naby Keita again, who is currently on loan from Werder Bremen and strengthening the midfield. Who else should we keep an eye on? Probably Barnabas Varga! The goalscorer is shining bright this season with 14 goals in 17 competitive games. The 30-year-old Hungarian was playing in Austria until five years ago – first with Mattersburg in the Bundesliga, then with SV Lafnitz in #LigaZwa.
The coach was also know for his goal threat. Robbie Keane, who scored 126 goals in the English Premier League as a player, took over the Fradi at the beginning of January and celebrated the Hungarian championship with them just a few months later. Under him, Ferencvaros usually play a variation of the 3-5-2 formation. Interestingly. Peter Stöger coached the Green Eagles in 2021, although he was only in office from July to December..
Three days before the start of the 2006/07 season, the Hungarian Football Association ruled that Ferencvaros would be expelled from the league due to financial irregularities and would have to compete in the second division that season. This was the club's first relegation since its founding. They were promoted again in 2009, and in 2015/16, the club finally won the league again.
Tickets for our UEFA Europa League clash with Ferencvaros TC are still available in our online Ticket Shop. Only ticket holders from the current and last three seasons are eligible to purchase tickets (deadline: July 1, 2022).
