Flamengo said on Saturday that it has completed the sale of defender Iago to Orlando City in the United States.
The 20-year-old featured at the start of the Campeonato Carioca, but he was not in the club's first team plans.
The deal is worth 1.4 million dollars, R$ 7.3 million. Flamengo held 60 percent of his rights, with Volta Redonda owning 40 percent, and the club will retain a percentage of any future sale.
His contract ran only until the end of this year and, though he received a renewal offer, limited opportunities with the senior side weighed. Having aged out of the U-20s, the view was that he would not have space with Filipe Luís.
Capped at youth level, he attracted interest from clubs in Brazil and abroad, with enquiries from Europe and Saudi Arabia.
He captained the cohort that won the U-20 Libertadores and the age-group world title, and he scored the equaliser against Barcelona in the 2025 final.
Iago joined Flamengo's U-17s in 2021, having emerged at Volta Redonda, and he made only four senior appearances for Flamengo.
