Chelsea made an offer for Fermin Lopez because they had a feeling they could tempt the player to leave Barcelona according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Blues had a busy summer and made six signings, with five of those attacking reinforcements, as the forward line underwent a major revamp.
Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Noni Madueke all left, whilst Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Buonanotte all arrived.
The Blues were expected to sign Xavi Simons having been linked with the Dutchman all summer, but they ultimately didn’t make a bid, and he joined Tottenham instead.

The Blues made an offer of €40m for Lopez, but reportedly neither the player or Barcelona responded to the offer.
Lopez has spoken on Chelsea’s interest, and Romano has now provided an update on the situation and potential future plans.
“Chelsea sent a bid for Fermin Lopez because they had a feeling they could tempt the player,” he said as quoted on X.com.
“They wanted to try! They technically didn’t need the player but saw an opportunity.
“He will stay on Chelsea’s list for the future!”
The Blues weren’t able to convince Lopez and opted to make a shock signing in Brighton’s Buonanotte on a season loan.
Chelsea surprised many with this deal, and the 20-year-old is expected to provide cover in the number ten position and on the right wing.
