Marseille have turned to familiar ground in appointing Habib Beye as their new head coach, succeeding Roberto De Zerbi. The decision carries emotional resonance as well as strategic intent, reconnecting the club with a former captain who once embodied its competitive edge.
Beye spent four years at Marseille, leading the side in his final two seasons before departing for the Premier League. His return now comes not as a player, but as head coach tasked with restoring authority and coherence.

The 48 year old’s journey has been varied. After leaving Marseille, he joined Newcastle, where he featured between 2007 and 2009, including the 2008-09 relegation campaign.

A subsequent spell at Aston Villa brought limited opportunities, just 18 appearances across three years, before he concluded his playing days at Doncaster in 2012.
Internationally, Beye earned 45 caps for Senegal. His managerial path has included roles at Red Star and Rennes, who parted company with him earlier in February.
For Marseille, this appointment blends identity and urgency. Habib Beye arrives as head coach with history behind him and expectation ahead.
