Only three teams took maximum points in the 2026 World Cup group stage, according to L'Équipe, France, Argentina and hosts Mexico. The group phase concluded on Sunday 28 June in the early hours.

France opened with their least fluent display against Senegal but pulled away after the break to win 3-1. They then beat Iraq 3-0 and clinched top spot in Group I by defeating Norway 4-1, Ousmane Dembélé hitting a hat-trick and Désiré Doué also scoring.

With a goal difference of +8, France are the leading side from the pools and among the three most prolific attacks, level with the Netherlands and Germany on 10 goals. They will face Sweden in the last 32 on Tuesday 30 June at 23:00.

Argentina, champions in 2022, impressed too, beating Algeria 3-0, Austria 2-0 and Jordan 3-1 as a sparkling Lionel Messi led the way. Messi tops the scorers' chart with six goals and they will meet Cape Verde at midnight between 3 and 4 July.

Co-hosts Mexico, alongside Canada and the United States, also claimed nine points. They won the tournament's opening match on 11 July against South Africa 2-0, then overcame South Korea 1-0 and Czechia 3-0. Ecuador await in the last 32 on 1 July at 03:00.
