France lost 4-6 to England in the World Cup third-place play-off in Miami on Saturday, conceding six for the first time since 1960.
L'Équipe described the contest as irrational.
They had not let in as many since 12 October, a friendly in Basel against Switzerland that ended 2-6.
That meeting carried little sporting consequence.
For a competitive fixture, the last precedent dates back to 1908, when France, only four years on the international scene, were beaten 17-0 by Denmark at the London Olympics on 22 October.
