PSG supporters endured a tense European night in Munich, delayed and outshouted before kick-off, yet they sang throughout as Paris went through after a 1-1 draw, their 5-4 first-leg advantage securing a trip to Budapest.

According to L'Équipe, around 3,700 travelling fans only truly found their voice once inside the Allianz Arena after a build-up of setbacks and simmering tension that replaced the usual noisy, choreographed procession.

What had been billed as a festive, supervised gathering became a silent march, leaving nearly an hour late after a metro train was halted six stations short when smoke detectors were triggered.

Earlier at Fröttmaning, the planned meeting point, about 15 PSG fans were confronted and chased by Bayern supporters as they stepped off the metro.

The afternoon had otherwise been calm around Marienplatz, where Parisians spread across terraces and shopping streets. Chants briefly flared from Der Spöckmeier on Rosenstrasse, the bar turning into a small Parisian enclave over a beer.

As kick-off neared the volume surged. The south end answered PSG’s first-leg Napoleonic tifo with a banner proclaiming they were bound for Budapest and sending Paris to Saint Helena, then unfurled a vast tifo urging their team into the final.

High in the third tier the away end spelled PANAME, and flares and bangers drew whistles from parts of the stadium. Parisian songs were often drowned out during loud protests over decisions against Bayern, but never stopped, growing louder as qualification approached. They will carry on in Budapest on 30 May.
