Fenway Sports Group have had their fair share of abuse while being the owners of Liverpool.
Even though the American businessmen have delivered some of the best moments in the Reds' history over the last few years, it feels like there's always been one or two things that they've done wrong.
Although making Jurgen Klopp their manager was one of the best things that they could've done, their successor for the German, Arne Slot, has had a bit of a mixed bag of results.
Last term, he was easily one of the Premier League's best manager and now, things just seem to be falling apart with the Anfield outfit trying their absolute hardest to just qualify for the Champions League.
Ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, plenty of change is expected in L4 but, before the season has even got properly underway, FSG may have already made their biggest mistake yet.
Xabi Alonso may have only just exited Real Madrid but it still felt like the timing was perfect for the Spaniard to come in and take over Liverpool.
The Reds have two of his best players from his Bayer Leverkusen days in Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong among their ranks which means that they'd have been able to help their teammates adapt to his style of play.
And, since he was a free agent, no compensation would've needed to be paid to acquire his services.
However, for one reason or another, FSG have chosen to continually back Slot and now, thanks to their inability to relieve the Dutchman of his duties, the former Liverpool star has joined Chelsea.
This was a massive blow to most Liverpool fans and, if he manages to produce similar results to his time at Leverkusen, FSG will surely be kicking themselves.
They had the perfect opportunity to replace a manager who's style clearly isn't working and they bottled it.
Hence why the worst mistake of Liverpool's 2026-27 season could've already occurred.
Although Alonso's three-at-the-back tactics don't really align with the brand of football that Liverpool are known for over the last couple of years, it still feels like he was the right man to take the club forward.
He's adored by the Reds' fanbase and, even though his performances weren't really up to standard with Real Madrid, his time with Leverkusen is hard to look past.
The Spaniard managed to get the best out of Wirtz and Frimpong with the duo becoming two of their best players due to their contributions to the team.
He would've also probably brought the best out of players such as Alexander Isak due to the formation and style of football he wants his team to use.
However, now that he's off the market and is ready to become Chelsea's manager, their perfect opportunity has slipped away which could result in dire consequences.
Of course, we're open to Slot turning things around but, with the way that Liverpool have played over the last couple of months, it's hard to see that happening in any way, shape or form.
Here's hoping that FSG know what they're doing and that they don't regret their decision to relieve Slot of his duties.
