Richard Hughes Faces Growing Questions Alongside Arne Slot at Liverpool

The scrutiny surrounding Arne Slot has dominated much of Liverpool’s disastrous campaign, but during Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Lewis Steele and Dave Davis also turned attention towards another key figure increasingly under pressure, sporting director Richard Hughes.

Throughout the discussion, the pair questioned whether too much criticism has been directed solely at Slot while Hughes has largely remained in the background despite overseeing major decisions affecting Liverpool’s present and future.

Steele made it clear that responsibility for Liverpool’s decline cannot sit entirely with the head coach.

“Slot is probably the main one to blame, but that doesn’t mean you can absolve the players of any criticism,” Steele said earlier in the podcast before later broadening the conversation to include the club’s hierarchy.

That shift became particularly pointed when Davis raised fresh reports linking Hughes with a move away from Liverpool after the summer transfer window, despite the sporting director still being central to crucial decisions around contracts, recruitment and the long term direction of the squad.

Richard Hughes Silence Raises Further Questions

One of Steele’s strongest observations centred around Hughes’ public absence during a turbulent season. While Slot has repeatedly faced media scrutiny, Steele argued that Liverpool’s sporting director should also be addressing supporters directly.

“I really think Richard Hughes should take some of the front,” Steele said.

He continued by highlighting how little Liverpool supporters have actually heard from Hughes since Slot’s appointment.

“We’ve not heard from him since the day that Slot signed publicly,” Steele explained.

That frustration reflects a wider feeling among sections of the fanbase that too many major decisions have lacked clarity. Contract situations involving senior players, uncertainty around transfers and confusion surrounding Liverpool’s long term planning have all contributed to growing unrest.

Steele suggested Hughes could help calm the situation by publicly reaffirming support for Slot while also clarifying his own future.

“Richard Hughes could pretty much say there and then we’re backing him until the end of his contract,” Steele said.

Instead, Steele described the current atmosphere as one filled with “so many question marks about everything”.

Liverpool Recruitment Strategy Under Pressure

The debate around Hughes also touched on Liverpool’s recruitment model and whether the club’s data driven approach is now coming under greater scrutiny.

Davis referenced the belief within Liverpool’s hierarchy that analytics still support Slot despite worsening performances and defensive numbers. Steele acknowledged Liverpool possess “data methods and models” far more advanced than anything visible externally, but admitted he was struggling to understand what the club could still be seeing.

“I have two eyes and so do the fans,” Steele remarked.

He then delivered one of the sharpest criticisms of Liverpool’s current football under Slot.

“They can see with their own eyes that the football is slow and they’re leaking chances and they can’t score goals and the midfield is just non existent.”

That naturally raises pressure on Hughes because Liverpool’s sporting structure was built to make elite football decisions consistently. Steele warned that if Liverpool’s hierarchy misjudge the situation around Slot, the consequences could stretch well beyond this season.

“If they get it wrong, it’s going to play into next season as well,” he warned.

While Slot remains the visible face of Liverpool’s struggles, the podcast made clear that criticism is beginning to spread beyond the dugout.

For Steele, the central issue is accountability. Slot continues to “face the music every week”, but the sporting director overseeing Liverpool’s broader strategy cannot remain invisible forever during a period of mounting uncertainty.
