Antoine Semenyo scored his second goal in his second City appearance to inspire us to a 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final first leg victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Semenyo and Cherki goals give superb City first leg advantage

The hosts had the best chance of the first 45 minutes inside five minutes as Jacob Murphy’s accurate cross found Yoane Wissa inside the box, but the striker blazed over James Trafford’s crossbar.

Shortly after the break, Trafford was called into action, showing incredible agility and concentration to step backwards and claw the ball away after Wissa’s looping header, before Bruno Guimaraes saw a shot crash off the post.

However, the opener came after superb play on the left flank by Jeremy Doku, who saw his cross deftly flicked on by skipper Bernardo Silva to the back post for Semenyo to tap in from close-range for his second goal since signing for City last week.

Semenyo thought he grabbed a brace moments later after his acrobatic flick found the net, but a lengthy VAR review followed by an onfield review saw the goal cruelly disallowed for Erling Haaland being in an offside position.

Deep into stoppage time, Rayan Cherki coolly slotted in our second of the evening after a fluid passing move, ensuring a healthy first leg advantage ahead of next month’s return leg at the Etihad Stadium.
