Germany and Slovakia will clash at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig this Monday in a crucial showdown that will determine automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Both teams currently sit level on 12 points as they approach the final matchday, with Germany holding a slight advantage on goal difference. As a result, the winner of this encounter will book their place at the 2026 World Cup finals.
For Germany, head coach Julian Nagelsmann remains hopeful that team captain Joshua Kimmich and defender Nico Schlotterbeck will be fit to feature in the match. Both players were absent during Germany’s 2-0 win against Luxembourg last Friday due to minor injuries. Schlotterbeck has been managing a foot injury sustained during Borussia Dortmund’s 1-1 draw with Hamburger SV, while Kimmich suffered an ankle injury during midweek training.
Following the victory over Luxembourg, Nagelsmann revealed that Schlotterbeck has a stronger chance of playing against Slovakia, whereas Kimmich’s participation is more uncertain. Kimmich himself expressed optimism, stating he “assumes” he will be ready for the upcoming game.
In striking form, Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade has been instrumental for Germany, scoring the last three goals in their World Cup qualifiers. The 23-year-old scored twice in the match against Luxembourg, netting in the 49th and 69th minutes, securing a vital 2-0 result. He also scored the decisive goal in Germany’s narrow 1-0 win over Northern Ireland last month.
Additionally, Nadiem Amiri was withdrawn from the squad due to an adductor muscle issue, with Assan Ouédraogo called up as his replacement earlier this week.
Possible Germany starting XI: Baumann; Baku, Schlotterbeck, Tah, Raum; Kimmich, Goretzka; Sane, Wirtz, Gnabry; Woltemade.
The match will kick off at 7:45pm BST on Monday, 17th November.
For supporters in the UK, the match will be available to watch live via Amazon Prime Video on a pay-per-view basis.
