Speaking while on England duty ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia, Burn acknowledged Newcastle fans’ anger towards the 25-year-old, who made clear his desire to leave the club this summer.

“I’m glad it’s done,” Burn admitted. “I think we wanted the transfer window closure to have a bit of clarity on it.

“I’ve been in football long enough to understand that for a player, the careers are short and they’ve got things that they want to achieve. So, for me, I’m happy that it’s over.

“Alex is a mate, so it was a tough situation because you want him to be around and helping the team, but also understand for him what he needs to do personally. I’ve got nothing but good wishes for Alex.”

When asked if there was any animosity towards him, Burn responded: “[There is] no animosity.

“Obviously, as a Newcastle fan, you know Newcastle fans are very protective of our club and our city. You want players to be there who want to play for Newcastle and you don’t want them to naively think that there’s anywhere else to go apart from playing at Newcastle.

“So, I understand why our fans are frustrated. But, as I said, I think I’ve been in the game long enough now to understand what goes on. I wish Alex all the best apart from when we play Liverpool, obviously.”

Now 33, the Newcastle defender is hoping that another strong season for club and country will secure him a spot in next summer’s World Cup squad.

“I think I try and go in with that mentality that I’m just leaving absolutely everything out there,” he said.

“I’ve always tried to not have any regrets and think, oh, I wish I had done this or done that. So I’m just trying to do exactly what the manager has asked and I think there was probably a lot of learning from the last time we played Andorra.”
