Newcastle United defender Dan Burn says he has “no animosity” towards Alexander Isak after the striker forced through a move to Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

The Sweden international completed a British-record move to Anfield on Deadline Day after going on strike and publicly accusing the club of breaking promises.

Isak‘s exit is a huge blow to Newcastle as they prepare to play in the UEFA Champions League this season, but Burn says he is relieved the saga has concluded and has “nothing but good wishes” for his former teammate.

Newcastle: Dan Burn ‘glad’ Alexander Isak transfer saga is over

“I am glad it is done,” Burn said on Friday. “We wanted the transfer window closed to have a bit of clarity on it. I have been in football long enough to understand that for a player, the careers are short and they have got things they want to achieve.

“Alex is a mate and it is a tough situation because you want him to be around and helping the team, but also understand for him what he needs to do personally. I have nothing but good wishes for Alex.

“No animosity. As a Newcastle fan, we are very protective of our club and city and we want players to be there who want to play for Newcastle and you don’t want them to naively think that there is anyone else to go apart from Newcastle. So I understand why our fans are frustrated.

“I wish Alex all the best apart from when we play Liverpool, obviously.”

Speaking ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra on Saturday, Burn says he thinks he is playing the best football of his career.

“The more camps I take, the more confidence from it,” the Newcastle defender said. “On a personal level, I am probably playing the best football of my career. I am in a good place physically and mentally, where I am up for the challenge.

“In my first camp, the World Cup was something not close to being on my radar. But now I am on camp three, I just want to implement what the gaffer is asking of me in the team and play as well as I can, so I can get picked for these camps.”
