Portugal beat Austria 1-0 in the U17 World Cup final at the Khalifa International Stadium on Thursday to win the tournament for the first time.

The only goal of the game was scored by Anisio Cabral, who is reportedly on Jose Mourinho’s radar at Benfica.

Duarte Cunha missed a chance to give Portugal the lead in the first three minutes, putting his shot wide after a fast break.

Austria registered the game’s first shot on target, with Romario Cunha saving Hasan Deshishku’s effort from inside the penalty area.

Portugal had an attempt saved at the other end when Daniel Posch prevented Rafael Quintas from putting the European champions ahead.

They made the breakthrough through their top scorer, Cabral, who slotted the ball home from close range for his seventh goal in the competition.

The goal allowed the Selecao to keep control of possession as Austria’s only chance before the interval was Luca Weinhandl’s shot from outside the box.

Austria started the second half with more attacking intent, forcing Cunha to make two saves early on.

Mateus Mide then squandered a big chance to double Portugal’s lead at the far post following a cross from Anisio.

Ifeanyi Ndukwe almost equalised for Austria, but Cunha pulled off a massive save to keep his effort out.

Daniel Frauscher was denied by the woodwork, ending Austria’s hopes of restoring parity.

Italy beat four-time champions Brazil 4-2 in the third-place fixture played earlier in the day.
