Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on former City stalwart Fernandinho after the Brazilian confirmed his retirement from football at the age of 40.

Fernandinho announces retirement from football

The Brazilian midfielder enjoyed a glittering career that included nine trophy-laden seasons at City between 2013 and 2022.

During that period, he won 13 major honours with City – including five Premier League titles – and he was even captain during his final two seasons at the Etihad.

Capped 53 times by Brazil, he left City three years ago to return to Athletico Paranaense in his homeland.

However, he has now called time on an illustrious career and Guardiola was keen to point out his impact during Friday’s press conference in Manchester.

“I thought when he left here it would be a few months and he would retire. He’s still playing, playing” he joked.

“Incredible memories. I have special players in my heart and that period here will always be there. Fernandinho is one of them.

“He helped me a lot when I arrived one decade ago and he has been a massive player. I am pretty sure he will be involved in football.
