Guardiola gives City a day off before Madrid fightback bid

Manchester City chase a comeback on Tuesday after a 3-0 defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu, Fede Valverde scoring all three, that has left them needing little short of a miracle to reach the quarter-finals.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Guardiola cancelled Monday’s planned training session, handing his players the day off before Real Madrid visit the Etihad.

The consequence is that City will approach the tie without a specific preparatory session. They played West Ham on Saturday and Sunday was limited to recovery work for those who started.

It is the second time this Champions League that he has done so, having also rested the squad before facing Dortmund in the league phase.

City won that match 4-1. A repeat against Madrid would take this tie to extra time.
