Liverpool welcome PSV Eindhoven to Anfield in the Champions League tonight/
The reigning Premier League champions are going through a dreadful run of form, but are hoping the Champions League offers a reprieve from their domestic shortcomings.
Arne Slot’s side hit a new low over the weekend. They were outmuscled, outplayed and outmatched by relegation-battling Nottingham Forest in a thumping 3-0 defeat.
Having lost by a similar scoreline to Manchester City before the international break, Liverpool matched a miserable record set six decades ago.
It was the first time the Reds had lost consecutive league games by a margin of three or more goals since the Bill Shankly era in April 1965.
Slot also became the first manager to oversee five consecutive Premier League defeats in 72 years, casting doubt on his long-term future at the club.
The morale in the Liverpool dressing room is at an all-time low, but Slot will hope his side can start to find their feet against their Eredivisie opponents.
Liverpool enter Wednesday’s Champions League clash with PSV searching for stability, and Slot’s biggest calls may come at the back before he even thinks about his misfiring attack.
Alisson is poised to make his third Champions League appearance of the season and his first since September, although his return didn’t make much of a difference against Forest.
Andy Robertson is expected to replace Milos Kerkez at left back, lining up alongside Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szoboszlai in defence.
Curtis Jones was a bright spark for Liverpool in the Forest defeat and should be rewarded by reprising his role alongside Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in midfield.
After making the worst-ever start for a British transfer record signing in over a century, Alexander Isak should drop to the bench in favour of Hugo Ekitike.
Mohammed Salah and Cody Gakpo will join the Frenchman in attack.
