It has been an outstanding season for Coventry City in the Championship so far, but their remarkable form could make them vulnerable to losing some of their star players in January.

After losing to Sunderland in agonising fashion in last season's play-off semi-finals, Coventry have taken the Championship by storm in the early months of the campaign and opened up a commanding lead at the top of the table.

The Sky Blues' success this season has largely been down to their prolific goalscoring form, but they have also been incredibly solid defensively, including keeping five consecutive clean sheets between September and October.

Given how well Frank Lampard's entire team have performed this season, it has been difficult to single out any individual players for praise, but defender Bobby Thomas is one man who has played a particularly integral role.

As they look to continue their promotion push, Coventry will be reluctant to sell any of their key players in January, but amid increasing interest in Thomas, their resolve to keep hold of the 24-year-old could be tested when the winter window opens.

Leeds United, Everton and Brentford plotting move for Coventry City defender Bobby Thomas

Thomas came through the Burnley academy, and after loan spells with Kendal Town and Barrow, he really made a name for himself in the 2022-23 season during temporary stints with Bristol Rovers and Barnsley in League One.

After helping the Tykes reach the play-off final, Thomas made a permanent move to Coventry in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £2 million, and he has enjoyed a hugely impressive spell at the CBS Arena, showcasing his excellent defensive attributes and chipping in with a number of crucial goals at the other end of the pitch.

Thomas was reportedly the subject of an £8 million bid from Sheffield United in the summer, while his former club Burnley and Brentford were also said to be keen, but the Sky Blues managed to keep hold of him on that occasion.

However, Coventry could soon be facing another battle to retain Thomas, with Brentford believed to be planning to reignite their interest in the defender in January, while their fellow Premier League sides Leeds United and Everton are also set to join the race for his signature.

As Thomas' list of admirers continues to grow, we looked at how much he currently earns with the Sky Blues.

According to Capology, Thomas takes home £4,000-per-week and £208,000-per-year at Coventry, although it should be stressed that those figures are an estimate.

That salary puts Thomas on a par with his centre-back partner Liam Kitching, and he is on more than the likes of Milan van Ewijk and Josh Eccles, but he is paid significantly less than some of the Sky Blues' bigger earners.

Luke Woolfenden, Matt Grimes, Ellis Simms and Haji Wright are believed to be Coventry's joint-highest paid players, with the quartet all receiving £25,000-per-week, while Kaine Kesler-Hayden (£20,000-per-week), Brandon Thomas-Asante (£15,000-per-week) and Jack Rudoni (£12,500-per-week) are also towards the top of the list.

Having previously played all of his football at League One level or below prior to his move to the CBS Arena, Thomas was unproven in the Championship when he joined the Sky Blues, which perhaps explains why his wages are much lower than some of his team-mates.

However, Thomas would likely bag himself a substantial increase in his salary if he was to make a move to the Premier League in January, so Coventry may need to consider offering him a new contract on improved terms to prevent his head being turned.
