Tajon Buchanan is set to join LaLiga side Villarreal on loan with an option to buy from reigning Serie A champions Inter, just one year after he joined Simone Inzaghi’s side, but the Nerazzurri could still turn a profit on the Canadian if the loan move is made permanent.
Buchanan joined Inter in the last January transfer window in 2024, signing from Club Brugge for a fee of €7m plus around €3m in bonuses. He was given a little while to settle for the second half of the 2023-24 season, but suffered a fractured tibia while away on international duty over the summer, which has limited his game-time in 2024-25 as well.
As a result, the Nerazzurri are prepared to let him leave on loan in order to gain a run of consistent minutes at a competitive level. Villarreal stepped forwards, and the player is just a few formalities away from completing the move.
According to updates from Gianluca Di Marzio, Villarreal will pay a fee of €1m to sign the 25-year-old on loan for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
Villarreal will also have an option to make the move permanent for a fee of €13m, which is at least €3m more than Inter paid for him just over a year ago.
