Sheffield Wednesday may cost more to purchase than originally planned.

John Textor or Mike Ashley would have to pay a pretty penny to buy Sheffield Wednesday and Hillsborough.

The Owls were placed into administration last month after a year of torture under Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership, which saw his financial mismanagement cost the club dear.

Players weren’t paid on time for five of the last seven months of his reign, which led to key operators such as Michael Smith, Josh Windass and Djeidi Gassama all exiting Hillsborough.

Wednesday were placed under five embargoes under the Thai businessman's watch, which limited their summer incomings to loan deals for Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass respectively.

Coupled with an automatic 12-point penalty for going into administration, it seems almost inevitable that they will now suffer the drop to League One.

This hasn’t deterred potential buyers from seeking the possibility of gaining ownership of the club, however.

Former Newcastle United chief Mike Ashley has been strongly linked with a move to take over Wednesday, with proof of funds no issue due to his previous involvement in football.

Another name reportedly keen on buying the Owls is US businessman John Textor, who sold his share in Crystal Palace during the summer and is looking for a route back into the English game, with Wednesday understood to be his preferred avenue.

Multiple figures have floated around over how much it would cost to purchase Sheffield Wednesday, with Ashley reportedly keen on striking a £10m deal.

However, according to a fresh report from journalist Alan Nixon via Patreon, it may cost any potential buyer a lot more than that.

Nixon states that the cost of buying Wednesday and Hillsborough whilst in administration is an estimated £50m, which accounts for debts and dealing with former owner Chansiri.

Whilst a lot lower than the £100m Chansiri was reportedly looking for before going into administration, the figure of £50m is clearly much more than Ashley was hoping to pay.

Wednesday were bought by the Thai businessman for £30m in 2015, so their sale a decade later would be for significantly more money, despite currently being in administration.

Sheffield Wednesday cost could make Mike Ashley - It may not be an issue for John Textor though

Taking over Sheffield Wednesday represents a remarkable opportunity for any potential buyer, due to their history in the game and strong fanbase.

However, Ashley may have second thoughts about buying the Steel City side if it will set him back £50m.

Having hoped to conclude an initial purchase for £10m, the former Newcastle United chief probably won’t be best pleased to have to fork out five times that amount to get a deal done.

Meanwhile, Textor has been able to raise £175m after selling his stake in Crystal Palace, and so if he's serious about Wednesday, then he may well be in a stronger position to get the deal done.

Therefore, it is still to be seen whether Ashley is willing to pay that much money to take over Wednesday, or if Textor could swoop in to seal a purchase instead.
