Brodie Spencer looks to be continuing his career in the Championship, where he'll be looking to realise the potential crafted at Huddersfield

Following Oxford United's relegation to League One last season, new Yellows boss Aaron Ramsey will be preparing for some of his Championship-level players to move on this summer.

Brodie Spencer could prove to be one of those as, according to an exclusive report from Football League World, the 22-year-old is of interest to both QPR and West Brom, two sides looking to improve and perhaps make a run towards the top eight in the upcoming campaign.

Spencer only just arrived at the Kassam Stadium last summer, and while he only started half of Oxford's league games last year, his involvement in the squad coincided with the Yellows winning games under Gary Rowett and then Matt Bloomfield.

Indeed, nine of Oxford's 11 league wins last year came in games that the versatile defender was involved in, seven of which came with him in the starting eleven.

A foot injury in November, which took him out for close to two months, saw the Yellows undergo their worst run of form that year, winning just one of nine league games, leading to Rowett being sacked in late December.

So, it's understandable that Spencer is one of the Oxford players who has Championship clubs wanting him to continue his development in the second tier with them, and if he does kick on elsewhere, it would be a real disappointment to Huddersfield Town.

Oxford signed Spencer from Huddersfield last summer, bringing an end to the 22-year-old's five-year stint in West Yorkshire. The Terriers brought the Northern Ireland international from Cliftonville in 2020, initially linking up with their B-team.

He featured sparingly in the 2023/24 second-tier campaign as Huddersfield were relegated and then had a breakout season the following year in League One, scoring three times, assisting twice and being one of the better attacking full-backs in the division at such a young age.

Understandably, Kevin Nagle and the rest of the higher-ups at the Accu Stadium wanted to retain him, and as he entered the final year of his deal last summer, offered him multiple "generous" contract extensions, which Spencer turned down in favour of a move back to the Championship with Oxford.

And while the Yellows didn't have a brilliant season last year, Spencer showed enough despite that to seemingly warrant another second-tier switch.

Meanwhile, the Terriers are still struggling to realise their Championship potential as a club, and are set to begin their third consecutive League One campaign in a few weeks, while their former academy product continues to compete higher up the EFL.

Crucially, if Spencer does move on to either QPR or West Brom, he'll be joining a side that likely won't be embroiled in a relegation battle, with both setting their sights on a play-off push instead.

The Northern Ireland international hasn't been part of a Championship side with those ambitions just yet, with his two campaigns at the level seeing him play for a club fighting to stay in the division.

There's the potential that the 22-year-old could be a player who performs better when around better players, and if that ends up being the case, there's a high likelihood that he could thrive either at Loftus Road or the Hawthorns.

And if Spencer does, Huddersfield will be feeling really frustrated that their actions on the field haven't matched their lofty ambitions off it over the past few years, as they could easily have been the side reaping the rewards of the versatile defender's growth.

Right now, the Terriers have their full focus on getting out of League One at the third attempt this season, but there'll be one eye on how their former defender gets on if he's able to make a move to a Championship play-off hopeful this summer.
