Blackburn Rovers are among several Championship sides weighing a move for Sunderland midfielder Alan Browne. According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Tony Mowbray is interested in the 31-year-old following his return to Ewood Park as head coach earlier this summer.
Browne has drawn widespread second-tier interest thanks to his experience at the level. After a deadline-day loan to Middlesbrough last summer, he featured regularly and at one stage won the Championship player of the month. A return to Teesside is viewed as unlikely this summer with Boro prioritising other midfield targets.
That stance has put rivals on alert, and Browne is expected to leave Sunderland later in the window. No move is advanced, and he has travelled to the USA with his team-mates.
He started in midfield in the opening pre-season friendly against York City. He is expected to play a prominent part against Liverpool, Leeds United and Wrexham in Granit Xhaka’s absence.
Xhaka is currently on a summer break after his World Cup commitments, and will rejoin the squad before the friendly with RC Lens on 8 August.
Browne has one year left on his Sunderland contract, so the Black Cats are unlikely to demand a significant fee. Any loan or permanent exit would still need to strengthen their position and reflect his pedigree.
