Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed some big transfer news on Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Ugarte endured an inconsistent 2024/25 season and he hasn’t started the current campaign any better.

Despite being regularly chosen ahead of Kobbie Mainoo, the Uruguayan has repeatedly failed to justify his selection, leaving a section of fans baffled as to why Ruben Amorim continues to back him.

His deficiencies on the ball remain evident and he offers little impact off it as well.

United forked out £50.5m to snap him up from Paris Saint-Germain and it’s already looking like it was a massive mishap by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the football leadership group.

According to Romano, United had the chance to offload Ugarte during the summer transfer window, with a number of Italian clubs making loan enquiries for the 24-year-old. However, United turned down offers for him, choosing to retain his services.

Romano makes big Ugarte revelation

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano remarked, “In the upcoming months for Manchester United, it’s going to be decision time on some players. This is going to be a part of the conversation.”

“There will be a decision to make on Manuel Ugarte.”

“I can reveal to you on Manuel Ugarte that there was a possibility of an exit this summer. Italian clubs were interested in Ugarte but Manchester United decided to close the doors to an eventual loan move.”

“So, this is why nothing happened. For Manuel Ugarte, we will have to wait and see if some club will arrive with a permanent deal proposal for 2026, because this might change the situation.”

“At the moment, Ugarte – who started in the Manchester derby – has the confidence of Ruben Amorim for sure. He’s working very hard, but there is interest from Italy and so that could be a case to follow in the upcoming months.”

United are back in action on Saturday when they host Chelsea.
