Benfica are reportedly showing no signs of slowing down in their efforts to land Ruben Amorim, as they anticipate the possibility of his Manchester United exit.

Amorim under immense pressure at United

Amorim is facing a fight to remain United head coach following the club’s latest defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

United suffered a humiliating 3-0 loss against Pep Guardiola’s men, who made light work of Amorim and his players at the Etihad on Sunday.

The result has left United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table, having won just one of their four opening Premier League fixtures. The Red Devils were also knocked out of the EFL Cup by League Two outfit Grimsby Town.

After the final whistle vs. City, a defiant Amorim stressed that he will not deviate from his approach despite being under pressure to engineer a turnaround in form.

However, it’s believed that United’s senior hierarchy, led by INEOS billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are still backing Amorim to come good.

That trust, though, may be tested should the situation fail to improve.

According to the Daily Mail, Benfica are keeping a close eye on the situation and are prepared to pounce should Amorim become available.

Benfica pushing to land Amorim

The Daily Mail reveal that a Benfica delegation was present at the Etihad on Sunday to watch Amorim’s United in action.

As per Chris Wheeler, “Ruben Amorim could be offered an escape from his Manchester United nightmare after the leading candidate to become Benfica’s next president turned up at the Etihad to watch Sunday’s derby debacle.”

“Joao Noronha Lopes has made no secret of his plans to take Amorim back to Benfica if he usurps Rui Costa in next month’s elections, and is currently ahead in the polls.”

“Lopes was at the Etihad to witness United’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday when he was pictured with his vice-president Nuno Gomes – one of Amorim’s best friends who played alongside him for Benfica and Portugal – and general director Pedro Ferreira.”

Gomes recently stated that Amorim is destined to take charge of Benfica in the future.

Bruno Lage is expected to depart Benfica when his contract expires at the end of the season. He could even be dismissed sooner if Amorim becomes available.
