Wolves are assessing Tommy Doyle ahead of a possible return next season, ExpressAndStar.com understands.

The 24-year-old midfielder is on loan at Birmingham and has played 38 times in all competitions, though he has not nailed down a regular starting spot.

Birmingham have an obligation to buy for about £10 million if they win promotion to the Premier League, but they are 11th so going up looks unlikely.

Wolves are bottom of the Premier League and expected to drop into the second tier, and head coach Rob Edwards has previously worked with Doyle at England under-20s but stayed guarded on any return.

Edwards said he knows Doyle well from his FA days, admires his qualities and has faced him in the Championship, but he would not discuss individuals while Doyle concentrates on Birmingham.

Wolves are also tracking loan players Sasa Kalajdzic, Nasser Djiga, Marshall Munetsi and Fer Lopez for next season. He added that staff, including Matt Jackson, will watch them and monitor their minutes and impact as they plan ahead.
