19-year-old Ibrahim Maza was one of Bayer Leverkusen’s standout performers last week, playing a key role in their 1-0 victory over Benfica and the 6-0 rout of 1. FC Heidenheim.
His display against Heidenheim was particularly eye-catching, as the youngster scored a brace despite being deployed in a deeper central midfield role.
"I always try to be involved in the action up front, to create opportunities and play those key passes," Maza told Kicker after the game.
"Of course, the role was a bit new for me. The team helps me a lot – teammates like Aleix Garcia and Rob Andrich, and in Lisbon also Jarell Quansah, coach me and show me where to position myself."
His performance against Heidenheim even led Kicker to compare him with Florian Wirtz, who left Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool in the summer for a record-breaking fee.
Bayer Leverkusen coach Kasper Hjulmand is well aware of Maza’s raw talent.
“He’s an incredible learner. He picks things up very quickly and works extremely hard. His personality sets him apart. But the experienced players also make it possible for players like Maza or Poku – they create the structure that allows young players to develop with us,” the Danish coach told Bild.
