Manchester City supporters may yet be reunited with Ilkay Gundogan for a third time in future, the German midfielder has suggested in a new interview.

Gundogan only left the Etihad Stadium at the close of the recent transfer window, sealing an emotional switch to Turkish giants Galatasaray on a free transfer in a move that marked the second time he had departed City after his previous exit to Barcelona in 2023.

The 34-year-old’s legacy at Manchester City is undisputed having registered a staggering 358 appearances, 65 goals, and lifting 14 major trophies across the course of his two spells at the Etihad Stadium.

From his brace against Aston Villa to clinch the 2021/22 Premier League title, to his record-breaking FA Cup final strike in 2023, Gundogan established himself as one of the club’s most iconic midfielders, while his decision to return in 2024 underlined his enduring bond with the club.

In recent weeks, Gundogan has repeatedly shown his affection for City and their supporters, from an emotional farewell letter published in a local newspaper to his comments upon being unveiled at Galatasaray, the midfielder has spoken openly of his gratitude for all involved.

Now, speaking as part of a final interview with Manchester City’s official club website, Ilkay Gundogan has spoke of his strong affiliation with the city and the wider region, whilst also hinting at a possible reunion in future.

“I have been there [in Manchester] for so many years. I’ve met some amazing people, obviously inside the Club, but also outside the Club. So many memories, also on a private level,” Gundogan explained.

“My two kids kind of grew up here. The older one obviously for a bit longer, but even my daughter as well, for a few months. My son started to walk in Manchester. He enjoyed being in the stadium and the training ground a lot. It means a lot to me, to my family,” he continued.

“It’s a place somehow, we will always be back, and we will always feel connected to it as a place that we will never forget. And a big thank you, because [the fans] made me feel special. I think the connection throughout all the years was amazing.”

Offering further explanation on his love for Manchester City’s fans, Gundogan also appeared to suggest that a reunion may yet come in future, as he said, “Their support means a lot. And it still means a lot to me and my family, we will always stay connected.

“We will always have what we achieved together. No one will ever be able to take it away from us. We will see each other soon.”

Speculation will naturally grow around what form such a reunion could take, with recent reports having already suggested that Manchester City officials see Gundogan as a potential candidate for a future coaching role.

The German’s leadership qualities and understanding of Pep Guardiola’s philosophy could make him a strong fit for the backroom staff, while his reference to a personal and family connection with Manchester may hint that his return could extend beyond football.

For now, Ilkay Gundogan enters into a new chapter with Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League and domestic honours, but Manchester City fans will be encouraged by his hints that his journey at the Etihad Stadium is not over just yet.
