Illan Meslier stood alone on the Elland Road pitch after Leeds United’s final home game, a 1-0 win over Brighton, in a subdued scene that felt like goodbye.
According to Leedsunited.news, he now looks set to leave after losing his place, with his contract due to expire in June.
He arrived from Lorient in 2019 on loan, later made permanent, and quickly became central under Marcelo Bielsa. He was first choice from the start of 2020-21, when Leeds seemed to have found a long-term number one.
Despite inconsistent spells in the Premier League, the club kept faith until Sam Allardyce dropped him for the final four matches of 2022-23, a significant moment.
After relegation, Daniel Farke reinstated him as first choice. He stayed number one through 2023-24 and much of 2024-25, yet scrutiny built.
Errors against Hull, Swansea and Preston proved decisive for many supporters. He ultimately slipped behind Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow in the pecking order.
The post-match image did not feel dramatic or defiant, more the muted close of a career that once promised much but became defined by mistakes and pressure. With early responsibility weighing heavy, Meslier now appears to be preparing to depart quietly.
