Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola showed his support to Liam Rosenior after the Englishman was relieved of his duties as Chelsea head coach on Wednesday.

Rosenior took charge of Chelsea from former Manchester City assistant Enzo Maresca, who was sacked by Stamford Bridge officials on New Year’s Day and has since been touted as the favourite to succeed Guardiola in Manchester.

Chelsea have lost each of their last five Premier League games without scoring a goal – a run of form that made Rosenior’s position untenable after Tuesday night’s damaging 3-0 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

Meanwhile, Manchester City built on their fine run of form with a fifth consecutive triumph in all competitions at Turf Moor to return to the top of the Premier League for the first time since the opening day of the league campaign in August 2025.

Guardiola: I’m so lucky I picked the right club

Guardiola empathised with Rosenior in a press conference after Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Burnley, offering his support to the fifth Chelsea manager who has been sacked under the west London club’s current ownership.

“I’m so sorry. I’m pretty sure he’s a manager for that level,” Guardiola said on Rosenior, having inflicted a 3-0 loss on the 41-year-old a few weeks ago. “Always when this happens, always I think about how lucky, again, I am being in the club where I am.

“I picked the right club 10 years ago, with an incredible hierarchy, incredible CEOs and sporting directors. Unbelievable.

“The consistency, the trust with the people I’m working with here, it’s amazing. I’m so lucky. The decision (of Chelsea) is not my concern.”

Will Guardiola be Man City manager next season?

There remain question marks over Guardiola’s own future at the Etihad Stadium as the Catalan approaches the final season of his current contract.

Match Report & Player Ratings: Burnley 0-1 Manchester City (Premier League)

While he has publicly maintained he remains focused on the job in front of him, there is a growing belief in Premier League circles that Guardiola will call time on his legendary stint at City at the end of this season.

However, it is also inconceivable that the 55-year-old departs Manchester City should they fail to go on and win the Premier League title this season as the Blues remain at a nascent stage of their transition under director of football Hugo Viana.

A firm decision on Guardiola’s plans for next season is expected to come at the end of May, by which time, City would hope they’d have won the domestic treble for the second time under the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager – whether that is enough to convince him to stick around for one final season or not remains to be seen.
