The Daily Telegraph’s Chelsea correspondent Matt Law has been on the London is Blue podcast this week after a short hiatus, and it gave him the perfect opportunity to give an assessment on the season so far.
He may not be a Chelsea fan, but he’s spent so many years covering the team that he usually comes up with similar thoughts to the fans, albeit with the insight he brings as a journalist.
When asked for what impressed him most about Chelsea’s season so far – and in particular with regards to what Enzo Maresca has done. He said what had surprised him most was how quickly our new coach had worked out his best team and stuck with it – in contrast to some recent coaches who hadn’t been able to do that.
You can see him make his comments in the clip embedded here, with this answer coming after 3 minutes:
Matt Law speaks on the London is Blue podcast.
“I think what’s impressed me most… is the way Enzo Maresca has settled very quickly on a first team. We’ve seen what he’s done with the A team and B team between the cups, and the A team – there’s been a little bit of shuffle in midfield and wing – but it’s been very clear what his first team has been really,” Law commented.
“Given the size of the squad, the fact there was a heavy turnover of players again and the fact he’s a new coach, it’s surprised me how quickly that’s happened, and I think that’s been really important for their start.”
It’s certainly been a positive from Maresca, although we’re sure Mauricio Pochettino would argue that his lack of a defined first team by this point last year was as much down to injuries as anything else.
