Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali has delivered a public message of resistance over Tarik Muharemovic, insisting the club have no intention of selling one of their key players despite widespread reports of a personal agreement already in place between the defender and Inter Milan.
Speaking to DAZN ahead of Sassuolo’s match against Fiorentina, via FCInterNews, Carnevali addressed the situation directly.
“There are situations in progress for Muharemovic, I read about agreements with certain clubs, but we have never spoken with anyone,” he said.
“Our intention is absolutely not to sell him. We have the desire and the strength to build a stronger squad than the one we have. It is not certain that we must sell him.”
However, these words must be read in the context of a negotiation still in its early stages at club level.
Indeed, the personal agreement between Muharemovic and Inter is understood to be in place, the Bosnia defender has given his enthusiastic agreement to a five-year contract worth €1.5 million per season rising.
Furthermore, Carnevali’s language is typical of a sporting director protecting his asset’s value.
Confirming a willingness to sell would only weaken Sassuolo’s negotiating position.
Therefore, the public stance and the private reality may differ significantly.
Inter remain confident in their pursuit, the player has said yes. Now the club-to-club negotiation must begin in earnest.
The excellent relationship between Inter and Carnevali should help. But Sassuolo will not make this easy, and Inter should expect a firm fight over the price.
