Javier Zanetti is undoubtedly one of the most iconic names to be associated with Inter Milan.

The Argentina joined the Nerazzurri in 1995. Few would have thought so at the time, but he went on to spend nearly two decades playing for the club.

During that time, Zanetti wore the captain’s armband for Inter.

Over that period as captain, Zanetti led the Nerazzurri to every trophy available. He lifted the Champions League in 2010, crowning a European Treble with the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia in the 2009-10 season.

And Zanetti’s association with Inter would not end there.

The Argentine would gain a role behind the scenes not long after hanging up his boots in the summer of 2014. He became Inter President.

Inter Vice-President Javier Zanetti said that is a “promise I have to keep for the future.”

“It’s something that I have to pass on to others every day,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Zanetti gave his thoughts on his final ever match for Inter. “It was a night that I’ll carry with me forever,” he said.

“Every moment. Every instant.”

“My teammates surprised me with a sign that said ‘Thank you, Javier,'” Zanetti recalled. “The whole stadium was packed for me.”

“The kids wearing shirts with the number four on them. It was a very emotional moment.”

‘The more that the minutes passed,” said Zanetti. The more that I realized that the end was in store.”

“I gave my all that night too,” said the former captain. “I told myself, ‘I’m going to miss hearing the roar of the Curva.'”

“I’ve still got some images that stay with me. My family on the pitch, my son wearing the number four shirt, my teammates celebrating my career.”
