Serie A pacesetters Inter slumped to a frustrating 1-0 defeat to arch-rivals Milan in Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina. Pervis Estupinan scored the only goal in a mouth-watering clash at Stadio San Siro to reignite the Rossoneri’s Scudetto hopes.

Despite winning 14 of their last 15 league matches, including nine in a row as a visiting side, Inter’s inability to perform in high-stakes fixtures under Cristian Chivu came to the fore once again. Indeed, the Nerazzurri suffered their first league double at the hands of Milan since 2010/11.

As a result, they now sit seven points clear of Massimiliano Allegri’s title hopefuls, with ten games left to play. Though Chivu couldn’t call upon Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez for this meeting, it wasn’t an excuse for Inter’s uneventful performance, highlighted by a disappointing 0.53 xG.

Indeed, Chivu’s charges have now failed to score in back-to-back matches after sharing the spoils with Como in midweek Coppa Italia action. Meanwhile, Milan scored from their only chance, as Estupinan powered home a devastating left-footed shot in the 35th minute to fire the Rossoneri to an all-important victory.

Yann Sommer – 5/10

His rookie mistake nearly helped Milan break the deadlock in the opening five minutes, but Luka Modric’s shot flew a whisker wide of the far post. There was nothing he could do to stop Estupnian’s thumping finish.

Yann Bisseck – 7/10

Though he sometimes looked a bit insecure in possession, the German defender’s pace proved crucial in stopping Rafael Leao from exploiting ample room down the flank, recovering well on several occasions to snuff out Milan’s counter-attacks.

Manuel Akanji – 8/10

Even though Inter failed to keep a clean sheet, it was a faultless performance from the Swiss star, who had a field day against Christian Pulisic and Leao.

Alessandro Bastoni – 5/10

Relentless jeers from the stands affected the Nerazzurri stalwart, as he made several uncharacteristic errors and picked up a yellow card for a cynical tackle on Adrien Rabiot.

Luis Henrique – 4/10

Despite demonstrating his technical skills on a couple of occasions, the former Marseille winger lost track of Estupinan for Milan’s winning goal and often opted to pass the ball to his closest teammates when he should’ve taken more risks.

Nicolo Barella – 5/10

The diminutive midfielder’s inexplicable dip in form continued, as he struggled to impose himself on the game despite enjoying plenty of possession.

Piotr Zielinski – 7/10

The Pole tried to be Inter’s driving force in the engine room, orchestrating his team’s play from deep in the midfield. However, he couldn’t provide the spark the nominal visitors needed to break Milan’s low defensive block.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6/10

The 37-year-old made a superb forward run to set himself up one-on-one with Mike Maignan shortly before Estupinan’s goal, but fluffed his lines, allowing the Frenchman to thwart his feeble attempt with a comfortable save.

Federico Dimarco – 4/10

It was a rare underwhelming night for Serie A’s most creative player, as he seemed low on energy and offered little threat going forward, struggling to influence the game in key moments.

Francesco Pio Esposito – 3/10

One of the most frustrating Serie A nights for Esposito saw the prodigious striker dominated by Strahinja Pavlovic, who had his number tonight.

Ange-Yoan Bonny – 4/10

The Frenchman showed more ambition and ability to cope with the Milan backline, but he ultimately failed to put Maignan to the test.
