Racist and xenophobic chanting during Spain’s 0-0 friendly with Egypt at Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium in Cornellà, Barcelona, prompted the anti-racism protocol at half-time and drew widespread condemnation.
The incident could lead to sanctions against the Spanish federation, potentially ranging from stadium closure to fines. Winwin in Egypt described shameful scenes that stain Spanish football’s image with the 2030 World Cup approaching.
After the match, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente delivered an unequivocal denunciation, calling any xenophobic or racist behaviour intolerable. He noted the scoreboard message and said most supporters whistled those persisting. He added that violent individuals exploit football and should be identified and kept away from society.
RFEF president Rafael Louzán struck a milder tone, saying such attitudes must be condemned and that reminders were shown on the big screens. He characterised it as an isolated incident and said the overall atmosphere had otherwise been good.
L’Equipe reported the anti-Muslim chanting marred the night in Cornellà and said it damages the federation’s image as Spain co-hosts 2030 with Portugal and Morocco. The BBC reported the Spanish federation had condemned racist chanting. Gazzetta dello Sport said xenophobic chants forced activation of the anti-racism protocol.
