Brentford midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard provided a goal and an assist as Denmark defeated Greece 3-1 on Sunday evening in World Cup qualifying.

Denmark remain top of Group C on goal difference with two games left to play in the November international break.

Rasmus Højlund capitalised on a defensive mistake to put Brian Riemer's side in front midway through the half, before Damsgaard's 40th-minute corner was headed home by Joachim Andersen.

A minute later, the Bees midfielder netted his sixth goal for his country, on what was his 36th appearance for the senior side.

Scotland, who beat Belarus 2-1 on the same day in the absence of Aaron Hickey, join Denmark on 10 points, but have an inferior goal difference, with both sides guaranteed at least a play-off place.

Caoimhín Kelleher's remarkable penalty record grabbed further headlines as he denied Cristiano Ronaldo from the spot for the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

The former Liverpool stopper's last three penalty saves have come against Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Kylian Mbappé.

Portugal did manage to snatch a 1-0 win through a stoppage-time header from Rúben Neves.

Heimir Hallgrímsson's side boosted their hopes of qualifying on Tuesday after defeating 10-man Armenia by the same scoreline in Dublin courtesy of Evan Ferguson's second-half goal.

Nathan Collins captained the Boys in Green in both fixtures, with the Brentford duo playing every minute across the October international break.

England secured their place at next summer's World Cup with a 5-0 victory at Latvia, with Jordan Henderson featuring from the bench to pick up cap number 87.

Thomas Tuchel's side will round off their successful qualifying campaign with games against Serbia and Albania.

Norway continued their 100 per cent record in qualifying with a 5-0 win against Israel, with Kristoffer Ajer playing the full 90 minutes at Ullevaal Stadion.

They top Group I with six wins from six and are three points ahead of second-place Italy, who they face away from home next month.

Ajer was an unused substitute in Norway's second fixture of the October break, which was a 1-1 draw in an international friendly against New Zealand.

It was also a successful October for Ukraine, who picked up two victories: a 2-1 success against Azerbaijan before winning 5-3 at Iceland.

Yehor Yarmoliuk started the first of those, with Hákon Valdimarsson not featuring in the defeat to Ukraine or Iceland's 2-2 draw against France on Monday evening.

Kevin Schade was called up to Germany as a late addition but did not feature in the matchday squad for either of their wins, which came at home to Luxembourg and away at Northern Ireland.

In African qualifying, Frank Onyeka came off the bench to score a superb volley in Nigeria's 4-0 win against Benin, securing the Super Eagles a spot in the play-offs for the World Cup.

Onyeka did not feature in Nigeria's 2-1 win against Lesotho four days earlier, but Benjamin Fredrick started both games.

Elsewhere, Dango Ouattara started as Burkina Faso defeated Ethiopia 3-1 on Sunday thanks to a Pierre Landry Kaboré hat-trick.

Jamaica, having lost 2-0 to Curaçao in their first game, returned to the top of CONCACAF Group B qualifying with a 4-0 victory against Bermuda, with Ethan Pinnock playing the duration of both matches.

Ji-soo Kim was an unused substitute for South Korea in a 2-0 international friendly win against Paraguay.
