Isaac Schmidt has completed a permanent move from Leeds United to BSC Young Boys on a four-year deal, seeking a reset after a challenging couple of seasons for player and club alike.
yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk understands Leeds have received £2m for the 26-year-old, meaning the club have not taken a book loss on his £2.5m arrival in 2024.
Schmidt signed a four-year contract at Elland Road but all 12 of his 2024/25 Championship outings came from the bench, with two FA Cup starts. He struggled to persuade Daniel Farke at full-back, often introduced late in more advanced roles, despite his defensive roots and versatility.
The Swiss international spent last season on loan at Werder Bremen, making 19 Bundesliga appearances, six of them starts, largely at full-back. Bremen did not trigger a permanent option.
Young Boys, champions six times in seven years between 2017 and 2024, slipped to third in 2024/25 then sixth last season, their lowest finish since 2013. Schmidt believes the squad has the quality to respond, aims to contribute experience from England and Germany, and wants to support younger team-mates.
Young Boys view him as a dynamic, defensively reliable full-back who contributes in attack, and plan to use him on the right, while noting his positional flexibility. Technical director Mathieu Beda highlighted his 2025 national-team involvement, with nine call-ups and five appearances, as evidence of potential.
