Isaac Schmidt has left Leeds United for BSC Young Boys, signing a four-year contract confirmed on Thursday, and setting his sights on helping the Bern club recover from a slump.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Leeds received a fee that protected their book value on his 2024 arrival. The 26-year-old departs Elland Road on a permanent deal.

He made 12 Championship appearances in 2024/25, all as a substitute, with two starts in the FA Cup. He spent last season on loan at Werder Bremen, who did not trigger a permanent option.

At Leeds, Daniel Farke was unconvinced by him at full-back, often using him late on in a more advanced role. A former St Gallen defender, he is versatile but primarily a full-back. In Bremen he featured mostly at full-back across 19 Bundesliga outings, including six starts.

Young Boys won six league titles in seven years between 2017 and 2024, then placed third in 2024/25 and sixth last season, their lowest finish since 2013. Schmidt accepted recent seasons have been difficult for him and the club, and said he aims to bring experience from England and Germany while supporting younger players.

Chief sports officer Christoph Spycher called him dynamic and defensively reliable, and said plans are to use him on the right. Technical director Mathieu Beda pointed to his 2025 national-team involvement, with nine call-ups and five caps, as evidence of potential.
