Italian journalist Gian Luca Rossi has given the backstory on why Inter Milan allowed Benjamin Pavard to join Marseille.

Rossi explained, via FCInter1908, that the Nerazzurri felt that the 29-year-old was wanting to leave and no longer as committed to the sporting project.

Inter had a busier deadline day than many had anticipated.

The Nerazzurri loaned defender Benjamin Pavard to Marseille, two years after he had arrived from Bayern Munich.

There had been transfer links concerning Pavard all summer. However, it took until the very end of the transfer window for the Frenchman to finally leave.

This came after Inter found a suitable replacement for Pavard, in the form of Manuel Akanji.

This move took many by surprise. In terms of ability as well as age, replacing Pavard with Akanji would appear to be at best a sideways move for Inter.

However, according to Italian journalist Gian Luca Rossi, there were other factors than just the pitch.

Italian journalist Rossi said of Pavard’s departure that “I’m not saying it’s right or it’s wrong.”

“The decision to sell Pavard was made because there was a clear feeling within the club, rightly or wrongly, that after his first season at the club, he gradually stopped putting Inter at the front of his mind.”

“There have been rumours that Pavard hasn’t been living a great life for an athlete,” Rossi claimed.

“Obviously, Inter will never come out and say that.”

“There was the padel tournament in Porto Cervo,” Rossi noted. This concerned a social media post which featured Pavard alongside ex-AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez.

“Inter weren’t a big fan of that,” the journalist said. “But it wasn’t just that.”
