In the last few months, FC Barcelona have been linked with several forwards in the market, mainly because Robert Lewandowski is already in the last year of his contract, and his advanced age makes it highly likely for him to leave the Blaugrana club this summer.
The Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has been one who has been linked with the Catalans particularly often. In fact, the former Barcelona President Joan Laporta also recognized him as a good candidate to replace the Pole, while also making it clear that he was not someone for whom the Blaugrana club would break the bank.
Now, after scoring two goals in his side’s UCL game against Tottenham, the Argentine talked to the media and commented on his links with Barcelona. As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the forward was clear that he is happy at his current club for now:
“Happy, I give my all in training, and today I’m happy for the support I received.”
Reflecting on his recent form, he added:
“I’m feeling very good. I had a streak that wasn’t great personally, but I always want to help the team. I give my maximum on the pitch, that’s what I can control, giving 100%. Sometimes I can do better or worse, but my desire is always there. I hope goals and assists keep coming, that’s what I want to help the team.”
Regarding the persistent Barcelona rumors, Alvarez was clear:
“What do you want me to say? I’ve never said anything. These things are talked about, then on social media they get blown up—one says something, and it generates comments—but I’ve never said anything. Obviously, I’m happy at Atlético de Madrid. Very happy, we’re competing well; it’s true that in La Liga we’re a bit behind, in the Champions League we’re doing well, and then there’s the Copa del Rey final.”
It is quite natural to see a player pledging loyalty to his club publicly, but these comments certainly do not bring Julian Alvarez any closer to Barcelona. For now, it remains to be seen how things develop and whether he would don the Blaugrana jersey next season.
