João Mário etched his name into AEK Athens history on Sunday, 10 May, scoring at 90+3 to beat Panathinaikos and clinch the Greek Super League title.
According to Glorioso 1904, the former Benfica and Sporting midfielder settled the contest against Renato Sanches’s Panathinaikos, sending supporters into raptures.
The former Benfica captain said the night felt like madness, praised the team’s work and maintained AEK had been the best side across the season.
Explaining the finish, he said it reflected his style, reading team-mates’ runs and waiting for the ball before applying the decisive touch. He added the strike might be remembered.
Looking at the play-offs, he believed the game in Faliro against Olympiakos was decisive, opening a five-point lead. He felt it was only a matter of time to achieve their aim, even if tonight had ended level.
This season he has made 37 appearances for AEK, 26 in the league, five in the Greek Cup, four in the Europa Conference League and two in the Europa League. Across 1,865 minutes he has six goals and three assists, and is valued at €1.8 million.
