Joey Barton has been arrested on suspicion of serious assault after an incident at a Liverpool golf club on Sunday evening.
Merseyside Police said the 43-year-old former Premier League midfielder was one of two men detained after an altercation outside Huyton and Prescot Golf Club at about nine pm. Emergency services were called to Fairway following reports that a man had been seriously assaulted, and both a 50-year-old and the 43-year-old were arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding, causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They remain in custody for questioning.
The victim, who has not been named, was taken to hospital with significant injuries to his face and ribs.
A cordon remains in place and forensic teams are carrying out detailed searches of nearby pavements and gardens.
Barton’s representatives have not commented on the specific allegations.
In December 2025, Barton received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, after being convicted over grossly offensive social media posts targeting female football pundits. A further criminal conviction during the operational period can trigger the suspended term. If charged and convicted of a Section 18 offence, he would face the near certainty of immediate imprisonment.
