John Carver almost achieved the impossible at Newcastle United.

When Mike Ashley chose to pocket compensation from Crystal Palace to get Alan Pardew, he gave the main job to his assistant.

What could possibly go wrong?

Newcastle United with 26 points from their opening 19 matches of the 2014/15 season and in the top half.

However, in the next 19 NUFC matches (all competitions) only two were won and 13 lost.

Only a Jonas Gutierrez inspired win on the final day of the season eventually guaranteed safety.

What could be worse for John Carver than that debacle and eventual sacking by Mike Ashley at the end of that season?

Well, he reckons he experienced it this summer.

John Carver claiming that worse than what happened at Newcastle United and his eventual sacking, was Scotland’s elimination in the Euros this summer in Germany, knocked out at the earliest stage possible.

John Carver as quoted by the Daily Record ahead of Scotland’s September internationals, talking about Scotland getting knocked out of the Euros this summer:

“I’ve got to be honest, in my career it’s probably the biggest disappointment I’ve had. Bear in mind I’ve lost my job at Newcastle twice, and at Leeds and Sheffield United. This was the biggest disappointment because I had so much excitement going into the tournament on what we had with the players and the staff and how we prepared.

“It was devastating and I found it really difficult to recover. Even going on holiday, it was still in my thoughts. It started changing when we actually arrived back watching games when I came up to Scotland, that’s when you start forgetting about it.

“I know it’s different for players because they have a short holiday, they go back to clubs and prepare for their seasons but for me it’s been very, very difficult and getting out there on Monday was like a breath of fresh air and I got my spark back. I was down, I was as low as anybody, disappointed.

“I found it extremely difficult, really difficult watching the games. Bear in mind how far England went in it, I wasn’t interested. I’ve got to be honest, I wasn’t. I watched the final, I watched it on holiday, I wasn’t interested, really wasn’t. Because I wanted to be in that next part of the tournament and we weren’t.”
