Former Norwich City attacker Jonathan Rowe could be departing Olympique de Marseille for Bologna under a cloud this summer.
Jonathan Rowe departed Norwich City for Olympique de Marseille last summer, and his move to the south of France only became permanent this summer, but he already appears set to be on his way from the Stade Velodrome.
Following his move to Marseille last summer, Rowe took a bit of time to get into the flow of things at the Stade Velodrome, and he was often on the periphery of the side, albeit he did have some memorable moments in the 2024/25 Ligue 1 campaign.
Perhaps most famously scoring a 95th minute winner in another ludicrous Marseille game at the Groupama Stadium as they defeated Olympique Lyonnais by three goals to two.
Under the management of Roberto De Zerbi, this iteration of Marseille is more than upholding the comical and chaotic nature of the club off the pitch with controversy and in-fighting matching the entertainment levels that they can bring to the pitch – and now it seems as though the latest flare-up is going to accelerate Rowe’s departure from France.
According to Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas, Serie A outfit Bologna are now in talks with Marseille over the signing of former Norwich City attacker Jonathan Rowe.
As Thomas reports, a move for Rowe had been internally discussed at the club but an argument with France international Adrien Rabiot at the weekend has seemingly accelerated that decision.
It is believed that Rabiot and Rowe had to be separated in the Marseille changing room in the aftermath of their 1-0 loss to ten-man Stade Rennais at Roazhon Park on the opening day of the Ligue 1 campaign.
De Zerbi opted for the unusual 3-2-4-1 system in that game to cram as many of his abundance of attackers in, and both Rowe and Rabiot did start the game for the Italian.
However, just a few days into the new season, it has now been reported that both players have been transfer-listed, and Rowe looks like he could be swapping France for Italy.
Having moved from Norwich last summer, after refusing to play at Carrow Road, Rowe enjoyed a reasonable first season in a top-flight, and did appear as though he would be ready to kick on this season.
The deal to take him to the Stade Velodrome was reported to be in the region of £14 million for Norwich, and he formed part of a stacked attack that has recently just added the returning Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Despite being something of a bit-part player last season, Rowe still formed a key part of England’s U21 squad as Lee Carsley’s Young Lions defended their UEFA U21 European Championship crown in the summer, with Rowe scoring the late winning goal in extra-time.
Rowe came through the ranks at Norwich and quickly established himself as one of the very best and most exciting attackers in the EFL, and so he will hope his performance level can be reignited should a move to Bologna come to fruition this summer.
