Reported Sunderland target Jonas Omlin has completed a loan move to Bayer Leverkusen after the Black Cats’ attempt to sign him fell through. The Switzerland goalkeeper welcomed the switch and talked up the scale of the challenge.
According to Sunderland Echo, the 32-year-old was discussed by Regis Le Bris’ side last week, with talks said to have been opened with parent club Borussia Monchengladbach over a temporary deal.
Sunderland could recruit a new understudy to Robin Roefs this month to free Anthony Patterson for a possible loan, with several Championship clubs, including Millwall, monitoring him. Any exit would only be approved if a suitable replacement arrives.
Leverkusen then moved following an injury to first-choice Mark Flekken, ensuring Omlin will remain in Germany for the rest of the campaign. He said he was grateful for the trust shown by a Champions League club with big ambitions and intends to contribute towards its targets.
Leverkusen’s managing director of sport Simon Rolfes said Omlin brings international experience and completes their goalkeeping group for the coming weeks and months.
Le Bris, asked about Patterson, said a January departure is an option only if he is replaced. He acknowledged the frustration of those not playing and stressed that competition with team-mates such as Robin and Granit determines selection.
