Following the loan signing of Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Jonas Omlin, Bayer Leverkusen head coach Kasper Hjulmand has opened the contest to be first-choice, with Omlin set to challenge Janis Blaswich. According to Get German Football News, Leverkusen have already registered Omlin for the Champions League.
Speaking at a Champions League pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Hjulmand said Blaswich will start against Villarreal tomorrow and that beyond that he will see how the competition unfolds.
He added that it would be a problem if Omlin had arrived without the intention of playing, while stressing the staff retain strong confidence in Blaswich. With another goalkeeper now in the mix, he suggested selection would be based on form.
Omlin, who lost both the first-choice role and the Gladbach captaincy before this season, said he has barely played in recent months and hopes to prove himself at Leverkusen. He vowed to do everything he can to make the coach’s decision difficult and said he is looking forward to the challenge.
He also noted that his first game after joining Gladbach came against Leverkusen and that he now gets to play for them. Already based in Düsseldorf, he joked the commute changes little, only the motorway exit.
