The troubles of Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee have seemingly sunk to a new low, as his struggles for regular minutes continue.
Zirkzee has failed to build on last season’s positives, enduring a troubling start to the 2025/26 campaign.
Despite being available for all of United’s 10 Premier League fixtures this term, Zirkzee has managed a mere 82 minutes of action. He was also afforded just eight minutes in the embarrassing EFL Cup defeat at the hands of Grimsby Town.
The summer signings of attackers Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have pushed Zirkzee firmly to the bottom of the pecking order at United. Zirkzee is believed to be unhappy with his situation and is even open to a January exit in a bid to get regular first-team minutes elsewhere ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
There has been no shortage of interest in the Dutchman, with the likes of AC Milan, Napoli, Juventus, West Ham, Sevilla, Real Betis and Brighton all mentioned as admirers of his.
However, United have made it clear that Zirkzee is not for sale. Ruben Amorim wants to keep him with a view to playing him more later in the season when the likes of Amad and Mbeumo are away for the Africa Cup of Nations.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Zirkzee remains a positive influence in the dressing room. However, a GIVEMESPORT update notes that his patience is now wearing thin as the winter transfer window approaches.
It’s understood that Zirkzee has grown increasingly despairing and is slowly resigning himself to the belief that he cannot change Amorim’s mind.
Sam Cohen of GIVEMESPORT claims, “While the forward continues to work hard, people close to him admit he’s ‘frustrated and confused’ by the lack of clarity around his role. ‘He’s done everything asked of him,’ one source said, ‘but he doesn’t know what more he can do.'”
The report notes that United staff have been left impressed with Zirkzee’s professionalism in the midst of difficult circumstances.
During last weekend’s draw at Nottingham Forest, he was spotted urging his teammates to go on the pitch and clinch all three points.
A source is alleged to have told GMS, “He’s not caused any issues, which is more than can be said for some who’ve been left out.”
United are back in action on Saturday when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford.
