Liverpool’s summer plans are beginning to take sharper shape, and the attacking department is emerging as a priority. Fresh insight from Lewis Steele, writing for the Daily Mail, points towards a significant shift, with major exits expected and serious questions over how the goals will be replaced.
The headline development centres on two high profile departures. “Mohamed Salah is definitely leaving, Federico Chiesa looks almost certain to follow him out the door.” That statement alone reshapes Liverpool’s attacking outlook.

With Mohamed Salah already confirming his decision to move on, the potential exit of Federico Chiesa compounds the issue. Two experienced forwards departing in one window leaves a major void, not just in output, but in leadership and reliability in the final third.
One name under consideration is Yan Diomande, though Steele raises a key concern. “Yan Diomande is the name that has come up the most but his price-tag is gargantuan. Is he worth the money? I can’t claim to have watched him enough to answer that question but it is one Liverpool will be weighing up.”
That uncertainty reflects a wider recruitment dilemma. Liverpool are no strangers to investing heavily when convinced, yet this situation demands precision. Replacing Salah’s numbers requires more than potential, it demands proven output or at least a clear pathway to it.
Steele’s assessment of the current options is stark. “Of the six that are here now, Mohamed Salah is definitely leaving, Federico Chiesa looks almost certain to follow him out the door and Hugo Ekitike is out for a large chunk of next season. That leaves you with three for the bulk of the campaign.”
That trio does not inspire confidence. Alexander Isak “has scored just two Liverpool goals and has looked nothing near a £125million player when he has been fit.” Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo “has been poor” and Rio Ngumoha “is only 17 and needs to be managed accordingly.”

The conclusion feels unavoidable. “I think Liverpool should be signing TWO attackers this summer.” It is a view grounded in availability, fitness, and output concerns.
Even with optimism around Isak’s fitness, Steele is clear, “he can’t play every week.” Liverpool’s challenge is not simply replacing Salah, it is rebuilding an entire attacking structure capable of sustaining a title challenge.
Losing Mohamed Salah was always going to be seismic, but the likely departure of Federico Chiesa alongside it turns a difficult rebuild into a potentially defining one.
There is a deeper concern around planning. The attack already lacked consistency last season, even before Salah’s exit was confirmed. Now, with Ekitike unavailable for a large stretch, the numbers simply do not add up.
Alexander Isak’s struggles are particularly worrying. A £125million forward should be carrying the attack, not being questioned for output and fitness. Cody Gakpo’s form has also dipped at the wrong time, while Rio Ngumoha is clearly one for the future rather than the present.
The call to sign two attackers feels less like a suggestion and more like a necessity. Liverpool cannot afford to place the burden of replacing Salah on one signing, especially given the pressure that will come with it.
If the club gamble on one marquee addition and it does not work, the season could unravel quickly. This is where recruitment needs to be decisive, balanced, and ruthless.
