had a Liverpool revelation for Chelsea in his talks with them. The Spaniard will take over at Stamford Bridge.
Xabi Alonso is not taking over at Liverpool. That much is clear after he agreed a deal with Chelsea to be their next manager.
Crucially, 'manager'. Not 'head coach'. That small change of wording defines a whole new role - Alonso will be running the show at Stamford Bridge in ways that Liverpool simply wouldn't allow.
Anfield Watch exclusively revealed that Alonso was requesting more power at a new club. Liverpool were not willing to give him that, even if they did sack Arne Slot.
And make no mistake: this is a real blow for the Reds. Alonso isn't just taking over at Chelsea but he's heading up a long-term project, meaning there's every chance that he's out of the picture for a long, long time.
So what does that project look like? Well, it appears Alonso's plan for Chelsea is actually very Liverpool-centric and he's taking on the ideas of Jurgen Klopp.
The Athletic reports that he told the Blues that it's important for the players to be 'mentality monsters' - a direct quote from Klopp and his Liverpool team. It seems that even with a different club, Alonso wants to enact the same sort of plan he would have used at Anfield.
It's one that will inevitably interest the Reds and, if it works, pile unimaginable pressure on Arne Slot.
Chelsea Appointment Confirmed
As of 19 May 2026, Xabi Alonso has officially been appointed as the new manager of Chelsea. The club confirmed the blockbuster news over the weekend, revealing that the 44-year-old Spaniard has signed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge and will formally begin his duties on 1 July 2026. Alonso succeeds caretaker Calum McFarlane, who stabilized the team after Liam Rosenior’s April dismissal. Tactically, insiders suggest Alonso will remain flexible rather than strictly bound to the back-three system he famously utilized at Bayer Leverkusen.
The Liverpool Connection
Alonso’s decision to join a Premier League rival has caused a massive stir, particularly among Liverpool supporters who had heavily advocated for his return to Anfield. Reports indicate that while Alonso may have favoured Liverpool due to his playing history, the Anfield hierarchy never extended an offer, choosing instead to fully back Arne Slot. This lack of contact allowed Chelsea’s ownership group a clear path to swiftly secure their primary target.
